He Had it All

Thousands of years ago, king David was the leader of God’s people.  He was a warrior, he ran the military, he played music, he wrote poetry, and he stood out from everyone else.  He was popular, famous, rich, and had loyal friends.  He had it all.

So what was the deepest desire of David’s heart?

This is what David says in one of the Psalms:  “One thing I have asked the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple.”  (Psalm 27:4)

So what was David’s number one priority?  What mattered most in his life?  If one thing could be said at the end of his life, what would that be?

David had been places, had seen all kinds of things, had important relationships, and had privileges and opportunities, but mostly, his true passion, was to walk in intimate communion with God.  If only one thing were to be accomplished, he might have said that his number one priority, was to live in the Lord’s presence, see His beauty, to know and love Him.  That’s what matters most.  The one thing to be pursued above everything else.

Was David flawless?  No.  The only One who could claim that, is God.

David did have flaws, and he did mess up some important relationships in his life.  But the God who loves us, would not let him go.  God pursues His people with confrontation, conviction, consuming, and cleansing love.

Why does God even bother?  Because He loves.  He is in pursuit of a relationship with His people.  Some of us turn to Him, and others turn away.  He still loves, and He still pursues.

I am thankful that only One thing is absolutely necessary; God.  He is all that we need, and He is more than enough.  We don’t find Him.  He finds us where we are.  It’s about a relationship because He showed His love for us, and He sought us, even though we were against Him.

What is the greatest desire of your heart?  What is the one thing that you would want to be said about your life?
