In our global
marketplace, English has become the trade language of the world. There
are websites in other languages, but not understanding English really
limits your ability to make the most of the web. At the same time,
customers whose native language is something other than English really
appreciate it when marketers can communicate in their language. Brain
mapping studies in the 1960's showed that if a person learns a second
language as a child, his (or her) language usage areas in the brain are
set up differently than if that person remains monolingual. This
different setup means that this person retains what is learned in other
languages, and learns new languages much more easily than someone who
waits until the teenage years or later to pick up another language.
In
parts of the US, it is becoming difficult to communicate if you don't
speak Spanish. Many of the big retailers--Home Depot, Lowe's--have all
their signs in both English and Spanish and people who speak both
languages are in demand.
German technology companies are selling and
installing equipment in the US and need techs who can understand the
original manuals for the equipment and train the new users in how to
operate and maintain it.
